Stop press... Final Senior World championships report from Helen
The quarterfinal of the consolation singles - after beating the American in a close 2hr battle 6-4 3-6 10-7 in the third set, I played very well and had enough determination to win the crucial tie break. I then had to play Eva Perczely from Germany in the semi-final; I had got the better of her in the doubles event but her extra power was too much for me to handle and I crashed out 6-0 6-1. Overall I played as well as I could, on a surface which I have never played matches on, with an end result of played 6 matches and won 3.

I watched many of the other age groups and know that our club members are not a million miles away from the top level of different age groups. Matches of note: In the womens 45's Christine French (49) from Great Britain got to the final (after a 4hr semi-final win over the number 1 seed) and after a 4hr marathon was unlucky to lose 7-5 in the third set, her American opponent making few unforced errors.
In the mens 85's the oldest players in the tournament took part and the final was contested by an 86 year old Austrailian and an 88 year old American; in 30 degree heat the Austrialian took it in three sets. The players took their time and produced quality tennis, and they could still move well around the court. What this experience has taught me is that you are never too old to play tennis and competition is for everyone.
The next world championships is held in Spain next April. For further information go to the ITF website for full stories and the winners. Also I would say the the organisation and facilities were fantastic, and I have made many new friends around the world.

News from the Committee
The committee is in the process of obtaining competitive quotes from construction companies to prepare the subsurface on the hard courts as a way of ensuring a longer term solution to the subsidence on the top courts. The existing ash and clinker would be excavated, a geo-textile membrane laid and the recycled surface re-laid followed by crushed type 4 aggregate to give a total construction of 300m3.
The floodlight placements would be set at the same time and the courts would then be usable as tarmac courts until such time as the funding allowed for easy conversion to the new surface.
Thanks to everyone for responding to the ball survey – a very emotive subject; net result by a majority member voting is we’re going back to Slazenger Wimbledon Hydroguard.
Thursday mornings have now been added to the list of official club play sessions (being Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings, Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons).
During all weekday club play sessions court 6 is allocated for free play and is subject to the 30-minute rule.
Please note that Helen is holding coaching sessions throughout August and depending on numbers may be using 2 or 3 courts during weekday mornings and afternoons. There are still a few places left, so being coached is always an option!
We have entered 4 men’s teams and 1 ladies team for the West Sussex Winter league 2008-9. The teams are open to everyone so if you’d like to play (only 5 or 6 matches over 5 months) please contact the team captains - details on the website www.scltc.co.uk
