Mitchell hits Mexico

Mexico report day 1

I arrived late Friday night, and used Saturday and Sunday as practice days, getting used to the heat and the altitude. The conditions are hot and the balls are flying about the court, it is taking some getting used to; when you exert yourself breathing can be tough, we are 6,500 feet up here in San Louis Potosi, Mexico.

Monday 5th April first match at 12noon was against Gabriela Riosegure from Mexico, after a few early nerves I won comfortably 6.0 6.0.

My next match is a quarter final against Mary-Beth Williams from the USA, this I expect to be a much closer affair. Wish me luck!

Mexico report day 2

Quater final against Mary-Beth Williams USA. She was a hard hitting American lady; I played an awsome first set to win 6.1, the midday heat began to take its toll and the match got a lot closer with the American winning a close fought 2nd set 6.4. We then had a ten minute break, a rule in very hot countries, I got off to a good start leading 2.1 in the third then tiredness began to set in and I went 4.2 down. She seemed to think she had it in the bag, but I hung in there and battled back to 4.4 , then she got tired and I found some British grit and rattled off the last two games to win 6.4. a three hour marathon, fantastic match. Playing the semi final today against the number 2 seed from Bulgaria.

Mexico report day 3

Played the semifinal wednesday 1pm in baking 30 degree heat, we played on centre court. I took an early lead against the bulgarian number 2 seed, Tsveltina Nikolova. I narrowly failed to close out the first set, my opponent making very few errors. I played attacking tennis, but in the extremely hot conditions I just coundn't get the upper hand and lost 5.7 3.6.

Bronze medal and enough points to break into the world top ten. A good result all around.
